Short CV

Prof. Dr. Claus Leitzmann, born in 1933, was Professor and Head of the Institute of Nutrition at the University of Giessen. He obtained his BSc. Chemistry at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, his MSc. Microbiology and his PhD Biochemistry at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.  He worked as a research assistant of Nobel Laureate Paul Boyer at UCLA (elucidation of ATP-synthesis) followed by five years of teaching and research in Bangkok (Biochemistry) and Chiang Mai (Nutrition), Thailand. From 1974 to 1998 he worked at the Institute of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Giessen as Professor of Nutrition in Developing Countries. He is the author or co-author of three dozen books on various aspects of nutrition. He has held numerous volunteer positions and received a number of awards. His areas of expertise include international nutrition, wholesome nutrition, vegetarianism, nutritional ecology, and nutrition education. Specifically, he investigated the nutrition behavior of vegetarians, vegans, raw food eaters and followers of alternative nutrition, pregnant women and students. His latest interest is focused on milk´s physiology and function.
